The Periodic Table lists all known elements and their abbreviations. Since new elements are still being discovered, the Periodic Table continues to grow. In 2019, the American Chemical Society and other organizations will celebrate the International Year of the Periodic Table to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Dmitri Mendeleev’s creation of the modern Periodic Table in 1869. For more information on the ACS celebration follow this link. For more information on the history of the Periodic Table and Mendeleev visit this site.

For a bit of fun, you can even write sentences using element abbreviations, a process known as transliteration. Below is a poem written by the Midland Section’s own Stacy Leroy Daniels. See if you can read what the paragraph says below. Scroll to the bottom of this page for the answers.

For an added challenge, see if you can write a poem or translate a few sentences of your own. Submit answers on this form. Follow this link for a complete online Periodic Table. You may even be featured on this website!
